Independence Community College (ICC) seeks applications for the position of Summer Core Course Instructor for the Upward Bound Program. Upward Bound is funded 100% by the U.S. Department of Education. 
 
Position Summary 
Core Course Instructors are expected to teach two sections of one core subject/course (either English, Math, Science, or Spanish) with the content being based on PSAT test or College board Advanced Placement course objectives. Each core course is taught in 2 sections (1 for rising 9th and 10th graders and 1 for rising 11th and 12th graders), for 3 hours (1.5 hours x 2 sections), twice a week, for 4.5 weeks, for a total of 27 total hours of in classroom instruction (13.5 x 2 sections). This is a seasonal position beginning May 29th, 2024 and ending June 27th, 2024. 
 
ICC’s Upward Bound Summer Program, also known as Summerfest, is a five-week college simulated residential program for high school students (grades 9-12) from 5 local Southeast Kansas schools. During Summerfest, students live on campus in residence halls and receive intensive academic instruction to improve their skills in English, science, mathematics, and a foreign language.  The afternoons are reserved for electives such as art, creative writing, weights, etc. Students also experience community service, career/college preparation, cultural/educational trips, and social activities.  
 
Compensation 
$1,300, less taxes, for one course with two sections ($650 x 2 sections) 
 
Qualifications 
·         Bachelor’s degree or higher in Education with an emphasis related to the discipline being taught (English, Math, Science, or Spanish) 
·         Minimum of one year teaching experience 
·         Teaching certification or similar 
·         Prefer a person with background similar to that of target population 
 
Primary Responsibilities 
·         Develop course syllabus/curriculum 
·         Administer pre/post-test 
·         Provide instruction for course 
·         Submit weekly attendance and grade sheets 
·         Communicate regularly with Upward Bound staff about classroom needs, student performance, etc.

·         Assure timeliness of reports and communications with information management skills 
·         Collaborative, collegial, and responsible work habits 
·         High degree of ethical standards, including adherence to general rules of safety, confidentiality, procedures, and fair labor standards

·         Time management skills and a high degree of organizational skills.  
·         Ability to manage multiple deadlines, tasks, projects and assignments

·         Position generally requires light work with occasional lifting of up to (20) pounds or more, carrying supplies, equipment

·         The ability to effectively learn new computer programs and applications as necessary; the ability to effectively troubleshoot changing computer software issues
